This paper focuses on legal regimes applicable to animals in Brazilian law, seeking to point out some of their ambiguities. In contrast to the increasing adoption of animal welfare norms, a long parliamentary debate has been developing for more than one decade concerning an unprecedented national dangerous dog's act. By following the steps of this debate, it becomes possible to identify some of the difficulties posed by non-human agencies to a legal tradition based on the dualism person-thing.
