This article presents a discussion about the relationship between development and territory in the northeast of Misiones, Argentina. Three areas of conflicts are analyzed: the dispute for wood between squatters and logging companies, the increase of land occupation related to the tobacco industry and finally the conflicting identifications that the actors construct and expose in their discourse about this contradictory and contrasting context. The analysis focuses on the spatial dimension of development as a process of domination and exercise of power by some actors over others, pointing out the various forms of land use and ownership. This study highlights the differential capacities of actors and the unequal power between them; it also shows the different situations of social conflict that are  generated when the contradictions deepen, and the different modes of conflict resolution that are implemented by the state and local actors.
