This article reviews the concepts and choices made about what is now called "intangible national heritage" by the National Institute of Tradition (1943-1955), later renamed National Institute of Philology and Folklore (1955-159) and later, Folklore National Research Institute (1960-1964) -nowadays, National Institute of Anthropology and Latin American Thought-. We examine the changes and continuities in the definitions attributed to the national heritage of this institution during 1943-1964, realizing the role that the discipline of folklore had in the national heritage study during this period and, in parallel, leaving a glimpse of how the problematization, definition and delineation or the incumbency of the folklore has been conformed in the tension between the State's demands and its constitution as an academic field.
