For people in the surroundings of the National Park Esteros de Farrapos e Islas del Río Uruguay (west of Uruguay) the recent statement as protected area of this space has meant a new entry in the globalization process, which formed part so far in relation to their productive (in terms of raw material suppliers in the developed world). This paper addresses the tensions and transformations among these residents generated from the process of implementing a protected area, in a context of high intensification of production. This National Park is embedded in a region with a long history of uses, from seasonal occupation for hunting, fishing and gathering in pre-conquest times until the increasing intensification of agriculture in today. This article discusses the tension conservation / production, attempts to resolve it by different social actors, and the consequences that this raises in relation to social inequalities.
