In Argentina, the implementation of the new law to protect the rights of children and adolescents, in October 2005, has modified the legal-bureaucratic device intended for their protection. This regulation set restrictions on judicial intervention and granted greater powers to administrative agencies. It also established that the practice of separation of children from their family environment would be used as a last resort. Based on an ethnographic fieldwork conducted in institutions of child protection in the City of Buenos Aires, during the years 2007 and 2008, this article intends to reflect on institutional treatment deployed, especially, to cases of “child neglect” Focusing on its moral dimension, this article analyses the interpretations of these situations performed by professionals and the ethical dilemmas that institutionalisation rises in those cases.
