In the late 1990s, artisanal fisheries in the lower part of the Paraná River (Argentina) went into crisis, especially because of the decline of fish stocks. This situation is leading to an impoverishment of the living conditions of artisanal fishermen and their families. One of the main causes of this fishing crisis is over exploitation of the resource, and it must be understood as part of the incorporation of artisanal fisheries into a capitalist logic that organize the activity. At the same time, communal resource management practices are preserved in local scale at the moment of capturing, while processing and marketing of products are organized by companies and, to a lesser extent, by intermediaries who work in local market. We analyze community-based fishing organization through the theoretical framework of complexity and adaptation. For that, we describe the organization of fishing within the domestic groups and social relations within the community. In this sense, we show how informal arrangements implemented by communities are increasing value in the context of fisheries crisis.
