Abstract

SCHIAFFINI, Hernán Horacio. La comunidad sobredeterminada: Articulación social y pueblo mapuche en Río Negro y Chubut (Arg.). Avá [online]. 2016, n.28, pp.159-181. ISSN 1851-1694.

We discuss the notion of indigenous “community” in the context of today’s Mapuche rural populations of Chubut and Rio Negro, in Patagonia, Argentina. We discuss the elements and processes that constitute the notion of “community”, but that are also constituted by it, taking into account historical, economic and political factors. We propose the following hypothesis: Mapuche “community” is a floating signifier. It is overdetermined and operates along the suture of various processes that are articulated through its presence. In support of this hypothesis, we review processes that constitute community, describing the main historical processes lived by the Mapuche people and exposing some of the current characteristics of  Mapuche “communities”. The article is based upon ethnographic research conducted in the region since 2009.

Keywords : Anthropology; Community; Mapuche; Overdetermination.
