This article surveys contemporary transformations in the definition of the categories of “musician” and “musical practice”, based upon ethnography carried out with a record label in the city of La Plata. In particular, we provide an analysis of a process in which young musicians transform the management of the constitutive skill of their musical practice. The article maps the competencies and interventions of these young musicians, showing their conflicts with other types of musicians and investigating their recognition beyond the La Plata music scene. It concludes with a discussion of meaning and direction in the new modes of musical production in relation to the traditional recording industry.
