GIORDANO, Mariana y REYERO, Alejandra. Expedición, visualidad y artefacto: Louis de Boccard en el Alto Paraná (Sud América, 1898-99). Avá [online]. 2016, n.29, pp.241-275. ISSN 1851-1694.
This paper analyzes a photograph album, a travel story and a paper with ethnographic outlook made by the Swiss explorer Louis de Boccard. This material concern the expedition across the Upper Parana River, through to Paraguay and Brazil (1898-99). It leads to a deeper understanding of exploratory practices with respect to collecting and ethnographic photography works in South America at the end of 19th Century. In this regard, the work takes from the Visual Studies perspective and characterizes representational topicspresent in both images and texts, considering those as visual constructions of colonialism, intercepted by de Boccard subjectivity. People and objects/artifacts ‘captured’ by photography, and images transformed into objects, but also descriptions of them inserted into album and the manuscripts means ways of displacement of the cultural and discursive material, as well as epistemic formations.
