Abstract

ALVAREZ, Ana Gabriela. Cuerpos transitantes: para una historia de las identidades travesti-trans en la Argentina (1960-2000). Avá [online]. 2017, n.31, pp.45-71. ISSN 1851-1694.

Based on interviews, field notes, scholarly and nonacademic publications, in this article I sketch out a history of travesti-trans identities and corporealities in Argentina from the Sixties to the Millennium, focusing particularly on the city of Buenos Aires. Even though models of embodied transsexual performance had started appearing in the realm of theater and later cinema from the Sixties onward, only in the Eighties a travesti identity begins to consolidate around the market of prostitution, which will go on to underwrite claims for political and legal rights in the following decade. As I aim to show, these identitarian transformations respond to, at the same time as they appropriate, a complex assemblage of factors including biomedical and communications technologies as well as legal and political violence and demands on behalf of the sex market.

Keywords : Travesti; Gender; Identity; Embodiment.
