Abstract

ROJAS MACHADO, Mercedes. Cuerpo y socialización: entre la cárcel y el hospital psiquiátrico . Avá [online]. 2019, n.34, pp.75-100. ISSN 1851-1694.

The present paper intends to investigate the relationship between the body and the socialization processes within a specific context: a psychiatric service of a maximum security prison in Argentina, where a civilian treatment program specialized in mental health is implemented. It is argued that, within this space, particular ways of branding, managing and showing of the body of the inpatients emerge, creating both cooperation and rupture channels between prison and psychiatric-therapeutic approaches. From an anthropological perspective, contexts in which people resort to different ways of processing their corporeality shall be analyzed to show that the body constitutes an object whose definition, appearance and experimentation is relational and polysemic; which links the protagonists, the social context in which they find themselves and the established values. It also seeks to shed light on the relationship between the body, the identity and the institutional processes in the field of mental health.

Keywords : Body; Prison; Mental-health; Socialization.
