The plant species with which Chorote shamans interact are identified. Modalities, procedures and purposes of their use are analyzed and discussed here with reference to their meanings in initiation, precautionary, propitiatory, therapeutic and harm rituals. Data was first-hand obtained from shamans and other Chorote indians of the Northeast of the Salta province with whom reference plant specimens were collected. Ninety five plant taxa and a fungus with 166 total references to shamanic practices and ideology, were registered. The main categories of plant-shaman interaction identified were related to damage (56,34%), as protection or refuge (47,28%), instrumental (25,15%), and in propitiatory (15,9%), therapeutic (12,7%) and preventive rituals (11,7%). The religious dimension that acquires the diversity and complexity of these interactions is evidence of the persistence of the inextricable link between the Chorote and the Chaco forest.
