Abstract
SORIA, Sofía. VIOLENCIA O DEMOCRACIA: HEGEMONÍA Y POLÍTICAS INDÍGENAS EN TIEMPOS MACRISTAS. Avá [online]. 2019, n.35, pp.261-282. ISSN 1851-1694.
The disappearance of Santiago Maldonado on August 1, 2017, after the repression by the Argentine National Gendarmerie in the Pu Lof en Resistencia Cushamen (Chubut, Argentina), drew attention to the “indigenous question” in the political and media scene. Based on statements by national government officials, official documents, and news items from hegemonic mass media about this case, the objective of this article is to analyze the discourses that constructed meanings in relation to certain indigenous political practices, especially Mapuche. I seek to show how the hegemonic rearticulations driven by Macrism involve a new conception of politics and a new way of dealing with opposition political practices, whose effect in the field of indigenist policies is that certain Mapuche activisms are signified as “violence”, “threat” to democracy and “terrorism”.
