Resumen

EILBAUM, Lucía. ESPERANDO Y CREANDO “JUSTICIA”: EXPERIENCIAS ETNOGRÁFICAS AL AGUARDAR POR AUDIENCIAS JUDICIALES EN CASOS DE VIOLENCIA DE ESTADO EN RÍO DE JANEIRO, BRASIL. Avá [online]. 2020, n.36, pp.195-225.  Epub 26-Nov-2020. ISSN 1851-1694.

Based on my ethnographic fieldwork with “relatives” of victims of state violence in Rio de Janeiro, in this article I discuss how the experience of “waiting for the judicial hearing” generates a sense of “justice” that is different from the construction of the official “judicial truth”. I argue that this expectation of justice based on the waiting experience is both complementary with and opposed to the formal judicial hearing. First, I present the spatial and temporal dimensions that characterize this experience. Second, I describe the social interactions taking place during and thanks to the “wait”. My central argument is that the “wait” discussed here connects with a broader “fighting” experience and generates alternative modes to “experience the state”. These other modes, while not excluding relationships of inequality and domination and experiences of pain, produce a sense of collective “justice” based on fighting and memory that challenges the state.
