The aim of this article is to explore the industrial development of the pharmaceutical industry between 1993 and 2012 using economic indicators of pharmaceutical production, foreign trade and relative price levels to analyze the medium term sustainability of this industry. The main features of pharmaceutical industry growth are visualized. They show the growth characteristics of pharmaceutical industry and its economic and social implications, considering that health-related activities such as production of medicines and research and development are merit or social goods, because they ought to be accessible to the whole society, especially essential medicines or those needed in an epidemic situation.
