This article uses the State tests results from secondary education as a fundamental element of reflection and how these results might influence the subsequent performances of college students. Firstly, a review on some existing tests worldwide is presented as well as some studies that have tried to attribute some level of influence/relation that these test results have in performance. Afterward, a methodological proposal that attempts to describe Colombian student’s entry requirements in a particular College over a period of time, these students’ academic progress is observed through a longitudinal analysis. This monitoring is done considering an intuitive measure of their performance in the subjects that are directly related to the components associated with mathematics and language. Thus, associations between performance on State tests and subsequent academic performance are determined, being the latter an analysis over time.
