Abstract

CABALLERO, Marta Elena. Simplex et Unum: formulation and fulfillment. Circe clás. mod. [online]. 2007, n.11, pp.73-90. ISSN 1851-1724.

On line 23 of the Epistula ad Pisones (denique sit quod uis, simplex dumtaxat et unum), Horace -following Aristotle- postulates the necessity for any literary work to observe an essencial unit. Many scholars have understood that this has not been fulfilled in the whole of Ars Poetica and even in many of Horace´s Odes. The aims of this article are: 1) to elucidate the stated theoretical principle; 2) to observe its fulfillment in Ars Poetica; 3) to observe its fulfillment in the Odes, regarding poetical experience prior to theoretical formulation.

Keywords : Horace; poetry; Poetic theory; Odes; Unity.
