Abstract

GALLEGO, Julián. Household agriculture and rural landscapes in ancient Greece. Circe clás. mod. [online]. 2007, n.11, pp.135-152. ISSN 1851-1724.

The article analyzes the conditions of peasant production taking into account recent researches on agrarian landscapes and residence patterns as well as the elements that in the literary sources allow identifying patrons of behaviour compatible with the model of the peasant economy. It is also studied the debates about the development of an intensive family agriculture in the Greek world and the role of "demographic" explanatory models. Finally, it is considered the relation between peasants and the market considering the presence of slaves within the domestic economies. The central conclusion insists on the incidence of the notion of autarky in the concrete organization of peasant units and on the limits that these found to fulfill with it.

Keywords : agriculture; peasant; slavery; market; autarky.
