GALLEGO, Julián. Social Control, Popular Participation, and Patronage in Classical Athens. Circe clás. mod. [online]. 2008, n.12, pp.187-206. ISSN 1851-1724.

This article studies the relationships of patronage and clientelism in Athens from the sixth to the fourth centuries B.C. It is discussed the significance of both categories for the analysis of the political and social institutions. It is identified different periods defined by the mutations produced by Solon's reforms, the tyranny of Pisistratus, the reforms of Cleisthenes, and the policy of Ephialtes and Pericles. Throughout this process, several transformations took place that affected, on the one hand, the links between aristocrats and the peasants who could be their clients, and, on the other hand, the role of the state in the organization of distribution networks of wealth. All this reduced the power of traditional forms of patronage in the socio-political global framework, marked after that by the importance of the competition for leadership within the central institutions of the Athenian democracy.
