The aim of this paper is to contribute to the theoretical discussion related to rural communities' participation in tourism development. It points out that the local population is the most important actor of these projects considering the collective opposition as strategy for their territorial resistance against external exploitation of natural resources. This research was based on the methodological proporsal of Manuel Castells (2003), who stablished three kind of social identities and experiences remarking the resistance perspective as the one that produce mechanisms of social organization for defense and common interests.
