Abstract

RODRIGUEZ DARIAS, Alberto Jonay. Protected Areas Facing the Pressure beyond its Limits: The Transformation into Heritage of the Mountains of Anaga and Teno (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain). Estud. perspect. tur. [online]. 2009, vol.18, n.3, pp.341-356. ISSN 1851-1732.

Protected areas have grown into importance since the second half of the 20th Century. Traditionally their functions have been limited within their administrative boundaries however, after the Durban 5th World Parks Congress held in 2003, the objective of extending the benefits of nature conservation to outside boundaries was established. This article presents the declaration of two protected areas that were raised in 1987 in order to deal with the negative effects caused by demographic and tourist pressures on a relatively large territory, the island of Tenerife.

Keywords : Protected areas; Demographical pressure; Impacts; Tourism; Territory management.
