The Genesis of Tourist Cities: An Analysis of Portimão (Portugal) Tourism Urbanization. New economic activities, like those related with tourism and leisure, have been influenced the spatial production process of the cities, promoting a process of urbanization distinguished that those occurred with the industrialization: the touristic urbanization, whose concept appears in 90´s with the Patrick Mullins’ theories. After Mullins’ pioneering, others authors have been discussing, mainly through empirical studies, the features of these phenomenon. As a contribution for these discussion, this paper aims to analyze the main features of the touristic urbanization process and its result - the touristic city, using the city of Portimão (located in south coast of Portugal), as case of study.
