Abstract

HERMANN, Paula M.  and  CAMBI, Viviana N.. Gaultheria nubigena (Ericaceae), a rare species in Argentina. Bol. Soc. Argent. Bot. [online]. 2006, vol.41, n.3-4, pp.317-322. ISSN 1851-2372.

During approximately 20 years of collecting material for floral development studies of Ericaceae in the subantarctic forests of Argentina, eight species of the nine that occur there were easily found. The exception was G. nubigena . It is a rare species; fifty-two years have elapsed since its collection in 1952 and more recently in 2004 when it was found in a new locality. Renewed searches during Dec. 2005 and Jan. 2006 resulted in the location of the species in the new locality (Lago Gutiérrez) and one of the previously known ones (Cascada Los Alerces); both populations consist of no more than seven to ten individuals. Most of the supposedly appropriate habitats visited in order to find new populations yielded negative results. According to the information available it will be considered as Vulnerable (VU) in the IUCN categories.

Keywords : Gaultheria nubigena; Ericaceae; Endangered species.
