Abstract

PROSPERI, J.  and  GRARD, P.. IDAO: a graphical tool for plant identification and capacity building. Its application in Laos PDR. Bol. Soc. Argent. Bot. [online]. 2009, vol.44, n.3-4, pp.441-451. ISSN 1851-2372.

In this paper, we present a knowledge base on one of the "hotspots" of biodiversity in Asia, the rain forests in the Northern Annamite of Laos PDR. This knowledge base is built on a tree species identification system (IDAO). This software differs from plant identification dichotomous keys, because it is an expert system completely graphical and with multi-entry access. We discuss about the advantages of this graphical system in understanding and assessing the biodiversity of these highly significant areas, as it would provide and facilitate dissemination of scientific and traditional knowledge.

Keywords : IDAO software; Annamite mountains; Laos PDR; Biodiversity; Rain forests; Trees identification.
