Melanoma is a neoplasm that originates from the melanocytes, cells derived from the neural crest. In Ecuador, between 2001 and 2005 an average of 18 cases in men and 26 cases in women were diagnosed in Quito, with an incidence rate of 2.5 and 3.2 respectively, while in Guayaquil, during the period

2003-2006, 49 cases were reported, with an incidence of 0.9 per 100.000 inhabitants in men and 0.1 in women. The exact etiology is not clear, it is considered a heterogeneous diseasewith multifactorial origin. Whenever possible, an excisional biopsy is preferable, removing the entire lesion. The determination of the sentinel lymph node along with the Clark level, the Breslow thickness and the ulceration of the tumor, are considered the most important prognostic factors of malignant melanoma.
