Resumen

SOSA, Francisco A. et al. Response of sugarcane to different nitrogen doses applied through subsurface drip irrigation and under rainfed conditions in Tucumán, Argentina. Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2015, vol.92, n.2, pp.7-16. ISSN 1851-3018.

Recently in Tucumán province and in North-western Argentina, there has been an increase in the sugarcane-planted area kept under drip irrigation. This technology impacts positively on sugarcane yields and offers new alternatives in fertilization management. Available local information about nitrogen fertilization in sugarcane under drip fertigation is still scarce. The aim of this work was to assess the productive response of sugarcane to increasing nitrogen doses applied through drip irrigation and under rainfed conditions. Two trials were carried out in Los Ralos (LR) (2010) and La Cruz (LC) (2010 and 2011), sites located in the dry sub-humid chaco-pampeana plain of Tucumán, Argentina. For both the irrigation and rainfed systems, increasing N levels were compared using a complete randomized block design. When the 86 kg N ha-1 dose (advised for rainfed conditions) was applied through drip fertirrigation, cane yields increased between 17% and 28%, even when the application was performed in a period later than recommended. Late N application reduced cane yield and delayed ripening. A later N provision had a more negative impact on cane ripening when applied through fertigation. Overall, fertigation significantly reduced sugar cane N uptake index
