Resumen

VIZGARRA, Oscar N.; ESPECHE, Clara M.; MAMANI GONZALES, Silvana Y.  y  PLOPER, L. Daniel. TUC 403 and TUC 464, two new Kabuli type chickpea cultivars for northwestern Argentina. Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2017, vol.94, n.1, pp.41-47. ISSN 1851-3018.

Based on its genetics, two types of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) are known: Kabuli and Desi. In Argentina, only Kabuli type varieties are planted, although few cultivars are available. Chañaritos S-156, Norteño, Kiara UNC- INTA and Felipe UNC- INTA are the only ones registered in the country. The release of new cultivars will be decisive to support the development of this crop in Argentina, because growers will have increased options for each region. The objective of this paper is to present TUC 403 and TUC 464, the first Kabuli type chickpea cultivars registered by the Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres. Both cultivars were selected from germplasm introduced since 2002 from the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), in Syria. Nurseries with elite lines were planted since that year in observation plots in La Ramada (Tucumán, Argentina), where lines were evaluated and selected on the basis of their structure, phenology, adaptation, yield, and grain quality. From nurseries introduced in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006, 16 genotypes were selected and evaluated in a Preliminary Test in 2008 in La Ramada. In 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, these genotypes were included in Comparative Yield Tests, planted each year at two locations. The local check was the cultivar Norteño. Results from these tests supported the decision to register TUC 403 and TUC 464 as new cultivars for northwestern Argentina. Both have good agronomic traits, yields, and grain quality, as well asa plant structure suited for direct harvest.

Palabras clave : chickpea Kabuli type; evaluation and selection; grain quality; northwestern Argentina.
