The purpose of this note is to present a botanical description of TUC 97-8, a new sugarcane variety created by the Sugarcane Breeding Program of Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres. Such description needs to be made whenever a variety is inscribed in the Registro Nacional de Propiedad de Cultivares (RNPC, National Register of Plant Varieties) of Argentina, which is administered by Instituto Nacional de Semillas (National Seed Institute). The variety was thus evaluated by considering 54 qualitative and quantitative botanical characters, once the plants had turned 10 to 12 months old, at their first crop age (plant cane). The evaluation was conducted in accordance with the guidelines set by the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants. As a result, this new variety was included in the Catálogo Nacional de Cultivares (National Cultivar Catalogue in Argentina) and the RNPC, under the terms of Resolution 51/2010 of Inase (File Nº 11.531).
