VIZGARRA, Oscar N. et al. TUC 450: new Desi type chickpea cultivar for northwestern Argentina. Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2019, vol.96, n.2, pp.31-36. ISSN 1851-3018.

Argentina produces and exports Kabuli type chickpeas; however, Desi type represents 85% of the chickpeas produced in the world. Both types differ in their morphological and agronomic characteristics. Cold tolerance, resistance to Ascochyta blight and an erect growth habit are frequent in Kabuli type chickpeas; whereas the Desi type chickpeas tend to have tolerance to high temperatures and drought, resistance to Fusarium spp., and precocity. The search for a diversified chickpea production in Argentina led the Dry Legumes Project of the Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres (EEAOC) to introduce Desi type genotypes from two international research centers. In 2009 the EEAOC received advanced lines from the International Center for Agriculture Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and in 2015 from the Australian Grains Genebank (AGG). These lines were evaluated in La Ramada, Tucumán province. During the 2016, 2017 and 2018 growing seasons, selected lines were evaluated in Comparative Yield Tests, planted each year in La Ramada, and adding in 2018 another location, Metán in the province of Salta. Parameters evaluated included number of days to flowering, number of days to physiological maturity, plant structure at harvest, grain color, seed weight, and grain yield. An analysis of the results allowed the identification and selection of one line with outstanding characteristics, which supported the decision to register it as a new cultivar of Desi type chickpea under the name of TUC 450
