ROMERO, Eduardo R. et al. Effect of different planting layouts under drip irrigation and rainfed conditions on sugar and cane yield of sugarcane in Tucumán, Argentina . Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2021, vol.98, n.1, pp.47-53. ISSN 1851-3018.

The effect on sugarcane and sugar production off our different planting layouts under drip irrigation and rainfed conditions during four years (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th ratoon) was evaluated. The trial was conducted at Overo Pozo (Cruz Alta, Tucumán, Argentina). The trial was planted in August 2012, using high quality cane seed of cv LCP 85-384. The experimental design was a factorial one, completely randomized with 8 treatments (4 planting layouts under drip irrigation and rainfed conditions). Each plot consisted of 12 rows 60 m long. Evaluated planting layouts were: 2.50 m alternate planted furrows; 2.00 m super wide furrows; 1.80 m wide furrowsand 1.60 m wide furrows. This last planting layout under rainfed conditions was considered a control, because it is used by farmers in Tucumán. Drip irrigation was an effective technology to improve sugar cane productivity, generating significant differences among treatments. 1.60 wide furrow under drip irrigation reached the highest production of sugarcane and sugar (t/ha) in every year. The new planting layouts showed similar production tendency to the control under rainfed conditions. Reduction of sugarcane and sugar production in 2016 harvest in all treatments was associated with the effect of environmental factors unfavorable for biomass generation.
