The production of sugarcane seedlings from isolated buds extracted in situ, allows to increase the seed cane multiplication rate and to produce a suitable material for replanting commercial lots. In this work the effects of: buds extraction time (age), different substrates and the use or not of fungicides on sprouting and initial growth of LCP 85-384 and TUC 95-10 seedlings obtained from isolated buds, were studied. Emergence and feedstock quality of sugar cane stalks that remained standing after the buds extraction were also studied. We analyzed: three times of buds extraction (May, June and July corresponding to 8, 9 and 10 months of age); two substrates and the use or not of fungicide. Sugar cane buds extracted in May had lower emergence percentage than in the other seasons. Different substrates studied did not affect buds emergence percentage. In LCP 85-384 the use of fungicide improved emergence. When buds were extracted in July, seedlings had higher dry weight and height, compared to June and May. Shoot emergence period was shorter for buds extracted in June and July than in May. In general, 15 days after buds extraction, the stems that remained standing showed losses in feedstock yield. The best bud extraction times for sugarcane seedlings production were June and July (9 and 10 months of age). Different evaluated substrates did not affect shoot emergence. The decrease in feedstock yield percentage increases with days since buds extraction, therefore the stems should be harvested up to 15 days after buds extraction.
