Resumen

ITURRE, M. C. et al. Recruitment and mortality of the main tree species in the Semi-Arid Chaco, Argentina. Quebracho (Santiago del Estero) [online]. 2020, vol.28, n.2, pp.134-144. ISSN 0328-0543.

The study was carried out in a semi-arid Chaco forest in Santiago del Estero. The objective was to determine the mortality and recruitment rates of the main tree species. Permanent plots were installed for a continuous forest inventory of trees with a DBH greater than 5 cm. The initial measurement occurred in 1996 and remeasurements in 2000, 2009, 2014 and 2017. To calculate the annual mortality rate, an exponential growth model was applied, from which a negative compound interest rate was obtained. The recruitment rate was calculated from a similar model as a positive compound interest rate. The species Prosopis nigra showed the highest mortality rate (11.12 %) and was the most dynamic, while that of the others species varied between 0 % and 2.36 %. The recruitment rate had values between 0 and 3.15 %, with Schinopsis lorentzii registering the highest number of incorporations. When considering the group of species, the mortality rate was higher than that of recruitment in the periods of 4 and 13 years from the first measurement. The recruitment rate grew above the mortality rate in the 18 and 21 year periods. The balance between mortality and recruitment allows us to infer that the forest has the potential to continue its development.

Palabras clave : mortality rate; recruitment rate; dry forests; dynamism.
