Abstract

SCHIFFINO, María Beatriz. Ricardo Rojas and the invention of the Argentina "mestiza". Rev. Pilquen [online]. 2011, n.14, pp.00-00. ISSN 1851-3123.

The main of this article is to analyze the concepts of race and nationality in Ricardo Roja's work: Cosmópolis (1908), La Restauración Nacionalista (1909) and Blasón de Plata (1910). From our point of view Roja´s work is a revision of both concepts that will characterize the author's ideas. Furthermore, we affirm that in his speech appears the intention of replace biological vision of race -developed by scientifics currents-, by other telluric-spiritualistic. The intention of Rojas was to review Sarmiento's dichotomy about civilization and barbarism and creat a new relation between the pairs denominated: indianismo-exotismo. While the author recognises indigenous and hispanic tradition as constitutive of nationality also affirms a new set of distinctions among political subjects, the ones who are qualified to drive national policy and the other ones who are to be submitted to the political and cultural domination. Finally, in Roja's scheme, the creole emerges as a central component, understood as the legitimated subject able to tell about Nationality and Policies in the centenarian Argentina.

Keywords : Ricardo Rojas; Argentina; Race and nationality.
