Abstract

With the arrival of fishermen at the port of San Felipe, Baja California during the second decade of the twentieth century, attracted by the totoaba fishery, a series of conflicts related to the dispute over the resource and the increase in the number of fishermen required that actions be necessary of cooperation, organization and mutual support in order to achieve greater use of marine resources, improve market prices, the commercialization of their products and the working conditions in which they carried out their activity. The case of the Cooperativa Ignacio Zaragoza represented the first antecedent of the fishing cooperative of the Upper Gulf of California through which it was benefited with the acquisition of rights and exclusive concessions granted by the Mexican government for the extraction of marine species from the Gulf of Mexico. California and its commercialization, offering at fishermen from San Felipe, work, a possibility of union and local community development in following decades.
