Madrid and its policies have been in the last decades, an model of best practices as a metropolitan city of a neoliberal type. However, more recently it became an example of the opposite, with a crisis of deep social and environmental costs. In that context, this work discusses three interrelated aspects. Firstly, it revises the literature on the characteristics of urban processes led by neoliberal logic, and it specified the case of Madrid. Secondly, it characterizes Madrid insertion in globalization process and its impacts over the metropolitan territory. Thirdly, it analyze the current crisis and its causes, by adopting a view to go beyond simple localization of phenomena on the territory and to allow seeing urban dynamics from a multiscalar approach, given sense to the role of the state and the transcalar links that perform the neoliberal process and its crisis.
