The International Monetary Fund (IMF or Fund) played a prominent and until today criticized role during the economic crisis that erupted in Argentina in late 2001. Several authors agree that the organism failed not only in preventing the outbreak of the crisis but that its intervention aggravated it. Nevertheless differences are seen around the motives which would explain its action. While some interpretations suggest that its intervention was part of a sort of "conspiracy" against the country, others argue that it was the logical result of the application of the established "technical" criteria that guide its action. Unlike previous approaches, it is proposed to analyze the IMF's behavior in contexts of financial crises as a result of the effect of three interrelated factors: a) the economic and geopolitical interests of the central countries; b) the interests from within the institution and its bureaucracy, and c) the behavior of the country in crisis. From the proposed conceptual framework, it is analyzed the IMF's behavior during the period previous to crisis' outbreak in Argentina (2000-2001). It is observed that its behavior gradually tightened both financially and in its conditionality policy.
