The automotive value chain is highly relevant within the Argentine economic structure: it accounts for a significant share of industrial employment and production, generates important linkages at the national and regional level, and concentrates most of the country’s medium- and high-technology exports. Its history shows that the automotive value chain has suffered the macroeconomic and regulatory swings associated with the changes in the economic policy orientation in general, as well as the regulatory modifications of its sectors in particular. In this context, the objective of this paper is to analyze the history and current situation of the automotive value chain in Argentina and Mercosur, focusing on the interaction between production and the international trade of the chain, demonstrating how they are determined by the regulations and sectoral institutional framework.
