The spatial and temporal diversity of the native settlement and subsistence systems in the upper and medium Limay river basin, northwestern Patagonia, is examined through written sources from the 17^th and 19^th centuries. Whenever possible, the connection between each system and the corresponding ethnic group (identified by its chieftain) is stated, and the nomenclature employed in the sources is mentioned and discussed.
