Resumen

VON SPECHT, Martha H et al. Epidemiology and microbiology of infections due to Staphylococcus aureus in misiones. First multicentered study. Rev. cienc. tecnol. [online]. 2010, n.14, pp.35-42. ISSN 1851-7587.

The aim of this multicentered study was to know the epidemiological and microbiological characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) causing infections in patients of different age groups A prospective cohort study was designed (September to November, 2009), including all new cases of SA infections. Ninety-one isolates were obtained. Global resistance to methicillin (MRSA) was 57 %. Fifty-two infections (57 %) were community-acquired (CA) and 32 (35 %) were hospital acquired (HA). Skin and soft tissues were the most frequent infections (49 %). The mecA gene was confirmed in 100 % of MRSA strains. The genes for Panton Valentine leucocidin were found in 23 isolates particularly in both MRSA-CA (12/19) and MSSA-AC (7/13). Multiresistant isolates were rare (7.73 %) and they were all MRSA-HA. We emphasize the importance of continuous surveillance and standardization of empirical treatment.
