Abstract
LOPEZ CARRASCAL, Luisa. The role of charm in ethic-esthetic education. Estud. filos. práct. hist. ideas [online]. 2015, vol.17, n.2, pp.43-56. ISSN 1851-9490.
In this paper I consider Nussbaum’s thesis in her book Not for Profit. Why Democracy Needs The Humanitiesis. According to Nussbaum we must work to reconnect education to the humanities in order to give students the capacity to be true democratic citizens of their countries and of the world. In the first part, I emphasis the place on the importance of “compassionate concern”: a disposition that is comprised of a cultivated sense of sympathy, widened and imaginative perspectives on the world. Such idea about sympathy derives from mid-18th century thinkers like Hume and Smith. Literature and arts play a key role in acquiring this competence. That is the subject of the second part of this paper.
