Abstract

MORRIS, Erick. An overlook on popular education and on the epitstemologies of the South: the Social Movements Popular University. Estud. filos. práct. hist. ideas [online]. 2017, vol.19, n.1, pp.31-40. ISSN 1851-9490.

This paper presents a reflection about some of the Social Movements Popular University (UPMS) experiences in Latin America in its 14 years of existence. This is done through the lens of popular education and of the epistemologies of the South, a theoretical proposal of Boaventura de Sousa Santos, which criticizes hegemonic western epistemological paradigms and argues for its overcoming. With a focus on Argentina and Brazil in the current context of regional political transformation, the text deals with challenges present in the articulation of resistances and the creation of emancipatory alternatives.

Keywords : UPMS; Popular Education; Latin America; Epistemologies of the South; Decolonial pedagogies.
