Víctor Mercante was responsible for the pedagogical aspects of the educational reform of 1916, by means of which mandatory schooling was reduced to four years and an Intermediate School for men created. A year after the reform was rolled back, the pedagogue published his work The crisis of puberty and its pedagogical consequences, in which he came to the defense of the aforementioned initiative. This text, showed him as a character with strong predicament in society. Throughout this paper we strive to account for that social fact to reveal, from the vantage point of his individual action, the ways in which a body of a wholly new kind of professionals turned into political and intellectual agents in the public sphere due to their possession of certain cultural capital
