Abstract

GARAVAGLIA, Juan Carlos. Una breve nota acerca de los "patriotas criollos" en el Río de la Plata. Prohistoria [online]. 2009, vol.12, pp.93-102. ISSN 1851-9504.

Throughout the Americas , the word "criollo" (the use of which has extended far beyond the continent), has acquired different connotations depending on the region in which it is employed. This short article is dedicated to analyzing the evolution of this concept in the specific context of the Río de la Plata. Based on historic (primary sources from the period in question) and historiographic material, these notes aim to explore the meanings that this term took on with the passage of time as well as the interpretations that it inspired. It will question in particular the notion that defines those who took part in the revolution of independence as "Patriotic Criollos", as if they would have adopted the term to describe themselves.

Keywords : Criollos; Patriots; Historiography; Río de la Plata; 19th century.
