Abstract

SANCHIS AMAT, Víctor Manuel. The Oath of Felipe II in Mexico City through the Actas de Cabildo: documental appendix. Prohistoria [online]. 2015, vol.23, pp.97-110. ISSN 1851-9504.

The Actas de Cabildo of Mexico City contains the notary's description of the ceremony celebrated during 6 and 7 June 1557 when the New Spain authorities swore allegiance to the absent King, Felipe II. It was the first time that this ceremony of legal nature and medieval origin was performed in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. During the Renaissance the Spanish monarchy developed this celebration in all its territories as a symbol of faithfulness and obedience. Upon loss of Commentary of the ceremony that the humanist Francisco Cervantes de Salazar printed on Juan Pablos press in 1557, a modernized edition of the transcribed description of the celebration in Actas de Cabildo is presented in this article, accompanied by a brief commentary of the ceremonial.

Keywords : Mexico; Oath; Felipe II; Cervantes de Salazar; Actas de Cabildo.
