Abstract

It has been demonstrated that complex human phenotypes, including those related to certain pathologies and drug response, are largely determined by genome coding sequences that may vary according to the ancestry and geographical origin of individuals or populations. In Argentina, the human population of the province of Chaco presents a great population diversity, given by the coexistence of native and foreign communities, whose genetic background, in relation to complex phenotypes, has not been studied in depth. The present work represents a contribution to the knowledge of the genetic diversity of Chaco human populations of different origin, revealing significant variation in the sequence of the OPRM1 and COMT genes, which modulate the transmission of the painful sensation and the response to analgesics. In the future, this information could be taken into account in medical decisions involving treatment and prevention of pain in each patient, leading to what is currently known as personalized genomic medicine.
