Resumen

SANCHEZ, María Soledad. The social ties of financial secrecy: A sociological approach to the illicit circulation of money in Argentina. Apunt. investig. CECYP [online]. 2017, n.29, pp.68-88. ISSN 1851-9814.

Contemporary finance is structured on a vast system of secrecy. This system is the condition of possibility of the consolidation and expansion of illicit financial practices that play a central role in the circulation and accumulation of global wealth. Illicit financial practices have proven to be particularly relevant in Argentina. The aim of this paper is to analyze the network of agents and financial practices that shapes the circuit of illicit ex-changes, as well as the micro-dynamics that explain the way in which social connections and illegal transactions take place in the local financial market from a sociological perspective. The hypothesis of the text is that financial secrets produce specific forms of sociability through their circulation and/ or reserve. Through a qualitative research approach, we will demonstrate that personal social ties, sustained in trust, are fundamental for the pro-duction of illicit transactions even in that alleged space of the most complete abstraction and despersonalization: the financial markets.

Palabras clave : Financial secrets; illegal strategies; social networks; personal ties; trust..
