Abstract

MAILHE, Alejandra. Imágenes del otro social en el Brasil de fines del siglo XIX: Canudos como espejo en ruinas. Prismas [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.1, pp.37-56. ISSN 1852-0499.

This work inquires into the dialogue between the essay, the chronicle and the photography in the apprehension of the social "others". In particular, it is focused in the representation of the repression and the resistance of Canudos in Brazil at the end of the XIX century. In this direction, it studies several discourses that dialogue and debate to each other: the essay Os sertões of Euclides da Cunha, the chronicles of de Machado de Assis about the conselheiristas (published in the Gazeta de Notícias between 1894 and 1897), and the visual corpus of the bahianian photographer Flávio de Barros. Those texts becomes -maybe unintentionally- in the inversion of the photographic, pictorial and discursive symbols gestated to celebrate the success of the republican modernization.
