Abstract

CAETANO, Gerardo. Philosophy and politics in Uruguay: Carlos Vaz Ferreira and "liberal republicanism" promotion. Prismas [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.1. ISSN 1852-0499.

From the analytical framework of the study of the relationship between philosophy and politics in 1900 Uruguay, the article explores the distinctive contributions of Carlos Vaz Ferreira in the conflictive and strongly negotiated configuration of the dominant matrix of the Uruguayan citizenship in the period. In this direction, it is argued about the hypothesis that presents Vaz Ferreira as one of the main "mediators" in building the enduring matrix of "liberal republicanism", core of the political ideology prevailing in that classic Uruguay of first batllismo. The following analysis emphasizes around some specific lines of thought: the indication of the more political dimensions in Vaz Ferreira biography; his role with Rodó in promoting a possible synthesis between positivism and spiritualism; the consideration of some of its specific contributions in the fields of education and in the debate on public morals, and the analysis of social problems of his time and the highlight of moral principles of citizenship.

Keywords : Uruguay; Philosophy; Politics; Citizenship; Liberal republicanism.
