This work analyses the "argentine station" of Octavio Paz. It reads The Labyrinth of Solitude in parallel with the argentine tradition of national essay, in the line which begins with Sarmiento's Facundo and ends with Martínez Estrada's X-Ray of the Pampa, searching on this tradition the series of motifs in which the work of Paz has been nourished. In this itinerary, the text underlines the importance of the problem of violence and the deep similarities in the way the different authors deal with it.
