This essay discusses the most common approaches to working class politics in Argentina between 1880 and 1945, and proposes an alternative view on this subject. It suggest that the degree of integration of the popular classes into the turn-of-the-century socio-political order was higher than most authors have suggested; mutatis mutandi, this pattern also characterized later periods. Therefore, it rejects the view that the growth of the left was a natural consequence of Argentina’s pattern of development during the export-led era. On the contrary, I argue that the two most significant experiences of political radicalization of the 1880-1945 period -the emergence of the Anarchist movement in the 1900s and the creation of a strong Communist labor movement in the 1930s-, which deviated from this pattern of integration, demand specific explanations. Finally, the essay advances some ideas on how to conceive the most salient features and the most important turning points in the history of working class politics in the era before the advent of Peronism.
